Permeable Space

"...the permeable space between history and memory..."  -Tina Wasserman

In 2013, I obtained permission to photograph the last remaining structures from the nineteenth century on the grounds of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, with the intention of resurfacing and tangibly experiencing the stories they held. This included the brick wall that surrounds the site, built with unpaid labour of the hospital’s patients at the time.

My process involved developing my film at my home with a mixture of household products, including instant coffee and powdered vitamin C. This, and the prints’ framing within second-hand books reflects how tangibility can breathe new life into stories that otherwise lay dormant in physical space and structure.
